Primary Function:
Provide a safe and secure campus environment by: protecting life and property; preventing and responding to crimes; operating the communications center; and assisting the college community by responding to requests of service. All duties will be carried out in accordance with local, state and federal laws, as well as college policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Respond to emergencies by assessing the situation, employing tact, diplomacy, and individual judgment to remedy and/or maintain control.
- Each Officer will become thoroughly familiar with the campus, college policies, department policies, and local, state and federal laws for the purpose of:
- -Preventing crime.
- -Protecting life and property.
- -Responding to and handling any disturbances and violations of local, state and federal laws and college policies.
- -Apprehending those engaged in activities of criminal or disturbing nature.
- -Noting and reporting suspicious people.
- -Assisting the community and public whenever possible.
- Patrol the college buildings and property surrounding the campus remaining alert for all accidents, incidents and irregularities, and reporting all such conditions.
- Operate telephone, including the switchboard and emergency lines.
- Monitor fire control systems and alarms.
- Monitor the surveillance cameras located throughout the facility.
- Monitor all radio traffic, including other departments and the police when applicable.
- Prepare necessary reports relating to all incidents encountered on applicable forms in a precise manner acceptable for outside distribution, including maintaining incident report information and keeping logs and files up-to-date.
- Provide information services to all walk-up traffic and telephone calls.
- Keep the dispatch and office areas secure at all times, prohibiting unauthorized persons from entering.
- Record and secure all lost and found items, and follow Public Safety procedures for returning the property to the owner.
- Enforce parking rules and regulations.
- Become acquainted with all faculty, staff and students.
- Maintain office and vehicle cleanliness.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma, or equivalent, required. Associate's Degree, preferred.
Experience: General security experience, particularly in a college environment, preferred. Understanding of law enforcement and the key issues that impact a security officer.
Skills: Must possess excellent written and oral communication and customer service skills, as well as interpersonal skills. Must have ability to prioritize when dealing with multiple high-priority situations. Basic Microsoft word experience helpful.
Other: This position has been identified as security sensitive, and as such will require a background check. Must pass Kari Koskinen Manager Background Check. Must pass Motor Vehicle DMV Check and possess a valid Minnesota driver's license, good record. At the discretion of the college, various background checks may be done during the course of employment.
This is an immediate opening for a full-time Public Safety Officer scheduled to work 40 hours per week on the 2nd shift (3:00 pm-11:00 pm), Thursday - Monday. Starting wage based on experience, between $12.25 - $13.50 hour, plus shift differential.
