The Minneapolis College of Art and Design has an immediate opening for a full-time, benefits-eligible Director of Gallery & Exhibition Programs. Works with all members of the MCAD community to provide inclusive and creative leadership that enriches the academic programs and promotes the mission of the college to the broader public, arts and design communities and cultural agencies. Acts as liaison to the professional art, design and donor communities by representing the college and developing opportunities that will advance exhibition and professional interactions.
Exhibition Programs:
Responsible for the direction, organization and installation of exhibitions and gallery operations. Coordinates programming that supports the academic programs and the mission of the college. Works with community and regional arts organizations for publicity, programming and co-sponsorship of exhibitions and related events.
Administers all aspects of the McKnight and Jerome Foundation Fellowship Programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide ongoing program of exibitions.
- Review and select traveling exhibitions and guest curatorial proposals.
- Administer a program of exhibitions in the College galleries. Supervise daily gallery operations (lighting, hanging, installation, exhibition removal). Supervise staff, contract workers, and work-study employees in gallery operations.
- Work with community and regional arts organizations for publicity and co-sponsorship of exhibitions and related events. Coordinate and promote the exhibition schedule and community events.
- Review: 1) student and faculty work, 2) works by artists and designers around the country, 3) exhibitions and creative work for possible inclusion in exhibitions at the College.
- Supervise the loan, acquisition, sale and storage of the MCAD collections of art.
- Assist in the planning, selection and coordination of visiting artists at MCAD in conjunction with faculty and staff representatives in order to plan short and long-term residencies, symposiums, lectures and performances.
- Project Director, McKnight and Jerome Foundation Fellowship Programs. Administrate all aspects of the fellowship programs, including supervision of the schedule and planning for the jury; traveling exhibitions, exhibition catalog, print and promotional materials; and program development for these programs.
- Teach 6 credits/12 contact hours annually. Report to the VP Academic Affairs for teaching duties.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Master's Degree in art history, studio or design area, or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum of three years of experience with curatorial activities. Effective record of exhibitions programming, management, visiting artists, and fundraising where applicable. Professional experience in organization and installation of exhibitions.
Skills: Must possess strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with diverse groups and a high level of verbal and written communication skills. Management abilities must include good interpersonal skills, budget management, effective staff management and responsible oversight of the gallery and its resources.
Other: This position has been identified as security sensitive, and as such will require background check. Must pass Motor Vehicle DMV Check and possess a valid Minnesota driver's license, good record. At the discretion of the college, various background checks may be done during the course of employment.
